Title: What's Love Got To Do With It?   Send to a Friend
Date: 08/01/2009

Friends,

Welcome to another addition of Women of Wisdom's (W.O.W) e-letter! W.O.W's mission is to encourage you to live the divine purpose for your life! Expect to see a W.O.W. e-letter monthly and be sure to pass them on to your friends.

Recently a musical icon died and I didn''t know how much I cared until now, a month after his death when I find myself still sad and wondering what might have been.  For me, it was like missing someone who at the core, left a long time ago.  I think I miss what could have been and feel sad for what he actually became.  I keep walkng around and at the oddest moments, I hear myself saying "poor Mike" and a wave of sadness overcomes me.  It doesn''t help that the news coverage is relentless.  It doesn''t help that in the final years of his life, he indeed was behaving in a way that resembled the name given him by the press - ''Wacko Jacko''.  That only makes me feel guilty about being so sad.  Should I be sad about the death of someone whose life, it seems, was a study in ''what it means to be on a path to nowhere''?

Was he a musical genius?  Yes.  An entertainer extraordinaire?  Absolutely!  But when its all said and done, what really matters?  What really remains?  Some would say, the music.  But I don''t believe that.  If that were true, why don''t we remember any of the songs that must have been popular during the days of the Pharoahs?

Then what does remain?  As always, for wisdom, I turn to the Bible.  Here is what it says:

"1 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don''t love, I''m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2If I speak God''s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don''t love, I''m nothing. 3If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don''t love, I''ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I''m bankrupt without love. Love never dies...

But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."  (1 Corinthians 13:1-3 MSG, 8-13 NIV)

So, it''s not the music that will last, it is faith, hope and love.  With the greatest being love.  I wonder if this musical icon ever knew the truth of God''s love.  Or was he like many others who are bankrupt because they go through life not ever discovering how much they are truly loved by an eternal, sovereign God.

Yes, many of us were ''thrilled'' by his music but like him, one day we will come face-to-face with the one who created us.  On that day we shall know fully even as we are fully known.  I pray that we learn now to embrace the love of God that was made evident through Jesus, the Christ.  Only then will we have the hope of eternity spent with Him.  And only then will we experience what really remains - God''s love.

Be Blessed!

Mary
