Title: Praying for Our Children   Send to a Friend
Date: 07/01/2007

Welcome to another addition of Women of Wisdom's (W.O.W) e-letter! W.O.W's mission is to encourage you to live the divine purpose for your life! Expect to see a W.O.W. e-letter monthly and be sure to pass them on to your friends.

3rd Edition, Volume 3, Demi #39

Sometimes as parents, we don’t always know how to pray for our children.  Of course we want what is best for them – but do we really know what is best?  It may have been easier to define ‘best’ when they were small and we asked God to help them learn their ABC’s or to color within the lines.  Sometimes we prayed that they wouldn’t bite other kids and learned how to wait their turn.  I remember when our daughter was younger, we were constantly praying for her to be obedient to us especially during the teen years.  But as time marches on, our children face bigger life issues and things become complicated.  As a result, our prayers and knowing how best to pray becomes complicated as well.

Recently, I was reading the story of Jesus immediately before His death and resurrection.  He was traveling to Jerusalem with His disciples and the mother of two of the disciples came to Him with a special request.  “Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came with her sons, Kneeling down and asking something of Him.  And he said to her; ‘What do you wish?’  She said to Him, ‘Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.’  But Jesus answered and said, ‘You do not know what you ask.’ “  (Matthew 20:20-22)

You see, at that time, this dear lady was under the impression that Jesus was about to build His kingdom on Earth.  Like any good mother, she wanted to make sure her sons got highly placed roles and positions of importance in His royal court.  She was excited to make this request because she loved her sons and wanted them to do well in life – so her request was from the loving heart of a mother.

But Jesus knew what she didn’t.  He knew that He was to die an agonizing death before coming into His true kingdom and He knew that anyone who wanted to be a part of that kingdom would have to drink from the same cup He was about to drink from.  I often wondered if this mother had understood what she was really asking for and the real implications – would she still have made the same request?  Would her prayers still have been the same?

And that is a question for you and me too.  As we pray for our children and ask God for what we think is best for them, have we stopped to consider that our ideas of ‘best’ may not be best at all or may require that our children go through difficulties that we hadn’t planned on?

The Bible teaches that we are to make all our request known to God.  But we must always remember to follow Christ’s example in Gethsemane when making these requests.  He said, “if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”  (Matthew 26:39).  More than His own desires for His life, He wanted God’s will for His life.  And that should be our prayer too.  More than wanting what we think is best for our children, we must desire God’s best for them.  After all, He knows what they were designed to do and has placed a divine purpose for their lives in their hearts.  As their parents we are to help them walk in their divine purpose and only then will they have the best.

Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you…”  (Jeremiah 1:5)
