I’ve come to realize something.  We are never going to be fully content in life until we choose to be.  There will always be something else we are searching for unless we stop, take note of our lives and say “I am content.”  What I’ve come to realize is that contentment is a choice we make each day.  We can look for all the things we are missing in our lives and dwell on them or we can look at all that we have in our lives and dwell on that.  In so doing, we come to realize that our lives are rich and full and although not without difficulty, that is part of the journey.  For what would a truly rich life be if there were no hardships, no disappointments, and no regrets?  Bland and flavorless I imagine.  It is those things along with the happy times, the joyful events and the winning moments that give life texture, intrigue, and adventure.   

 

This realization hit me as I started a new chapter of my life – that of the empty nester.  Why didn’t anyone tell me how lonely I would be?  Where were the warning signals that a big loss was about to occur?  I went along haplessly during the days before my daughter’s departure for college thinking I had this thing together.  How amazed I am that I am completely undone and wondering what will life be like in this very quiet, empty nest?  

 

Some said, “I tried to tell you what it would be like.”  And that of course is true.  All my empty nester friends did send out a few S.O.S’s but I was still clueless.  Others said, “You have your work, you’ll get over it.”  And although that may be true too, work will never take the place of my girl, in fact, it doesn’t even come close.   

 

So, as is typical of me, I went to God’s word to gain comfort and guidance.  And as is so typical of Him, He spoke to me gently through the words of the prophet Isaiah: “If you do not stand in your faith, you will not stand at all.”  (Isaiah 7:9b)  Wise counsel.  

 

I took it to mean that sometimes we simply have to ‘faith it, until we make it’.  Even when your world feels upside down, you must choose to believe that better days are ahead and that the plans of God are still being worked out on your behalf.  In other words, you must choose to be content now no matter what the circumstances.  And that is what I have chosen to be.  Content.  

 

Do I wish that for a moment I could turn back time and still be able to push my little girl on her swing?  Sometimes.  But more than that, I look forward to the bright future that is ahead for all of us.  What adventure!  What joy!   

 

Yes, today I choose to be content and with God’s help I will make this same choice tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that…..  

 

11I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.  (Philippians 4:11-13)
